Emily Carr, Instructor

Emily Carr is a recent graduate of Carnegie Mellon University where she received her B.F.A. in Vocal Performance, A.M.S. Certificate in Vocal Performance, and K-12 Music Education Certification.

In her time at Carnegie Mellon, Emily worked with several master teachers, including Metropolitan Opera veteran Mildred Miller Posvar and internationally-acclaimed baritone Daniel Teadt.  In her studies with these experts, she learned the Bel Canto style of singing while specializing in opera and musical theatre.  In her search to become a finer singer and teacher, she spent two years studying vocal pedagogy with Carnegie Mellon professor Jennifer Aylmer.  Her Pedagogical studies include vocal anatomy, prominent vocal teaching philosophies, and practical vocal teaching methods for private lessons.  As a vocal teacher, Emily utilizes her extensive studies as well as years of experience as a musical performer to challenge and mentor her students.

Comfortable and well-versed in both opera and musical theatre, Emily has performed in operas and musicals throughout the Pittsburgh area.  Her most recent roles include Suzanna in scenes from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Mrs. Peachum in Britten’s The Beggar’s Opera, and featured soloist, u/s Fantine in the PMT’s production of Les Miserables.  Other musical theater credits include Belle in Beauty in the Beast, Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, Hope Cladwell in Urinetown, and Jellylorum in Cats.  Emily has also participated as a performer and director for “Greek Sing”, an annual philanthropic event in which Carnegie Mellon organizations perform segments of musicals to raise money for charity.  Her roles in Greek Sing musicals include Nala in The Lion King, Whatshername in American Idiot the Musical, and Elle Woods in Legally Blond the Musical.

Emily has extensive experience not only in performance, but also in the classroom as a music instructor.  In the summer of 2016, Emily taught choir, guitar, ukulele, and songwriting at a music summer camp in Unity, Maine.  Currently, she teaches specialized music classes and private voice and piano lessons at Chatham University’s Music and Arts Day Camp.
